Tango no Sekku（端午の節句）

From today, May 5, through May 10, the solar term is Rikka, or “Beginning of Summer,” and the microseason is Kawazu Hajimete Naku, meaning “Frogs Begin to Sing.” On the traditional calendar, summer begins today.
Rikka marks the turning point from spring to early summer, when the sunlight grows brighter and the plants and trees begin to show the signs of the new season. Kawazu Hajimete Naku describes the time when frogs begin to sing by the water’s edge.
In addition, Japan has a custom observed every year on May 5 called Tango no Sekku, a day to pray for the health and growth of boys.
It is common to celebrate by displaying gogatsu ningyō (warrior dolls), raising koinobori (carp streamers), placing iris leaves in the bath, and eating chimaki and kashiwa mochi.
In our family, although my son is now grown and lives away from home, I still display a hariko no tora, or papier-mâché tiger, each year as a prayer for his good health. Hariko is a traditional craft technique in which a frame made of wood or bamboo is covered with layer upon layer of paper, and folk crafts made in this way can be found in many parts of Japan.
This particular tiger is a folk craft from the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture. It was given to me by a former supervisor whom I deeply respect, in celebration of my son’s birth. Each time I display it, I am reminded of his warm smile.

本日5月5日から10日までの二十四節気は「立夏（りっか）」、七十二候は「蛙始鳴（かわずはじめてなく）」です。暦の上では、今日から夏が始まります。
「立夏」は陽射しや草木の成長に初夏の気配が感じられる、春から移り変わる節目を表していて、「蛙始鳴」は、水辺で蛙が鳴き始める様子を表しています。
更に、日本には毎年5月5日に「端午の節句（たんごのせっく）」という男の子の健康と成長を願うという習慣があります。
五月人形を飾ったり、こいのぼりを掲げたり、お風呂に菖蒲の葉っぱを入れたり、ちまきや柏餅を食べて祝うことが一般的です。
我が家は息子が成人して離れて暮らしていますが、毎年、彼の健康を祈って「張子虎(はりこのとら)」を飾っています。張子（はりこ）は、木や竹で芯を組んで上から幾重にも紙を張って作る技法で、日本各地に張子の民芸品が存在します。
これは私の尊敬する元上司が、息子の誕生を祝って贈ってくれた島根県の出雲地方の民芸品で、この虎を飾るたびに彼の笑顔を思い出します。
